OVERVIEW / HISTORY
In 1726, William Fell, a Quaker, purchased land to build a storehouse in an area east of Baltimore. In 1763, this area became known as Fells Point. Recognized for it's excellent deep water port, Fells Point became a prominent east coast harbor and cornerstone of the east coast ship-building industry. The Fells Point Ship Yard was responsible for producing the first frigate of the Continental Navy, the Virginia, in 1775 and the Constellation in 1797. During the period from 1784 to 1821, over 800 ships were built in the Fells Points shipyards. The most famous of these Fells Point ships were the "Baltimore Clippers", well known for sinking many British ships.
Nearly demolished in 1967, to make way for a large interstate highway, Fells Point was saved by the acts of numerous preservationists. Fells Point maintains it's heritage and the character of a quaint and colorful waterfront community. Today's Fells Point is an area rich with shops, restaurants, pubs, hotels, and museums.
